From Station Street to the approval of a hospice and medical centre, there has been plenty of discussion and debate.
In no particular order, here are the top council stories for 2018.
- Fiery council debate over additional funds for council projects
“We really need to get a whole lot better, in my view, at project costing and project management.”
This comment by councillor Ian Scandrett sparked a fiery response at the August 22 council meeting.
- Council delivers $17 million in capital works
Wingecarribee Shire Council has completed 119 Capital Works Projects totaling more than $17 million during the last financial year.
Councillors were briefed of the impressive output as part of Council’s recent quarterly Finance Committee Review.
- Station Street Upgrade gets approval to proceed from councillors
Councillors have voted in favour to move forward with the Station Street upgrade.
The council chambers were packed for the debate at the February 14 meeting. Members of the public made sure their objections were heard during the debate.
- Final remediation costs over RRC asbestos clean up released by council
Cleaning up asbestos found at the Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) has cost council more than $2 million.
A report was presented to the finance committee at its most recent meeting on February 21 on the final costs of remediation.
- Councillors vote to disband Economic Development and Tourism Committee
The Economic Development and Tourism committee has been disbanded.
The decision was made at the February 28 meeting and followed on from a previous debate in 2017 where councillor Ian Scandrett was asked to step down as chair of the committee.
- Council overturns hospice, medical centre DA decision
Wingecarribee Shire Council has overturned a decision to refuse a development application (DA) for a hospice and medical centre in Bowral.
The DA, which was refused at the October 10 ordinary meeting, related to the demolition of existing dwellings and the construction of a health services facility including a hospice at 104 to 106 Bowral Street, Bowral.
- Council reissue letter asking for reclassification of shire for waste levy charges
The fight continues to lower the shire’s waste levy charges.
Council currently pays the EPA a metropolitan rate for the waste levy.
- Councillors vote in favour of testing Dividing Fences Act in court
The fight to reduce the number of Leylandii in the shire continues.
Councillors voted at the April 11 meeting to take a tougher stance on Leylandii planted in the shire which are ‘stealing’ views and vistas.
- Concerns raised over Holly Road and Moss Vale Road intersection
“It’s such a dangerous road”.
This is how councillor Garry Turland has described Moss Vale road heading out of Bowral.
And in particular the intersection at Holly Road.
- Residents urged to save heritage
Residents are up in arms about a development application for a historically significant building.
The building, recently known as Sunshine Lodge, located at 5 Alice Street in Mittagong, was constructed in 1926 and was principally used as a boarding house.
