Services for the community
Justice of the Peace
Justice of the Peace volunteers will be at the following locations to help people with documentation weekly. It is a free service.
- Springett's Arcade: Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm
- The Jellore room at the Wingecarribee SC administration building: Thursdays from 10am to 1pm
- Mittagong Market Place: Saturdays from 10am to 1pm
The desk will not be in operation on Easter Saturday (March 30).
Mobile Community Recycling Centre
Wingecarribee Shire Council has started its free mobile community recycling centre this month, which stops in many of the towns and villages. This week, it will stop at Exeter Oval on March 20, from 8.45am to 12.30pm.
Items that can be collected include:
- Small household and automotive batteries
- Waste oils
- Smoke alarms
- Cardboard
- Styrofoam
- Fluorescent lights
- X-rays
- Writing instruments
- Empty gas bottles
- Fire extinguishers
- Mobile phones
- Ink cartridges
With council
Ordinary meeting of council
- March 20, online, 3.30-5pm
Different issues in the Highlands will be discussed at this meeting, which will be livestreamed on the Wingecarribee Shire Council website. The minutes and agenda will be posted on the council's website closer to the date.
An Aboriginal playgroup
Gunamaragang Burraay Djindjingara (Little Child Stars) Playgroup
- Every Thursday, Community Links Centre: 6 Harper Close, Tahmoor
Community Links has established an Aboriginal-focused playgroup called Gunamaragang Burraay Djindjingara, which means Little Child Stars in Dharawal. The playgroup will focus on day-to-day activities and host cultural events and celebrations, which involve the broader community and showcase the richness of Aboriginal culture. Activities at Mittagong Seniors
Mittagong Seniors hosts an array of activities at the Mittagong Senior Centre weekly. See the list below:
- Ukulele meet-up: Tuesday (9-11am) and Thursday (12.30-2pm)
- Board game sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30 to 11.30am
- Line dancing: Tuesdays from 11.15am to 12.30pm
- Mature movers gentle exercise classes: Thursdays 9.30am to 10.30am

Learning about the Care Finders program
- March 26, Mittagong Community Centre, 10am
This morning tea session will provide insight on the Care Finders program, which is for vulnerable people who need support. It is a free service. There will be a free introduction and then the chance to chat with workers who are responsible for connecting people in the Wingecarribee, Wollondilly and Camden local government areas.
NSW Seniors Festival
Seniors across the Highlands can enjoy activities such as garden and art tours, morning teas, tai chi, workshops and more. The Seniors Festival will run until Sunday, March 24. For more information, head to wsc.nsw.gov.au/events-directory/Seniors-Festival-2024.
Ways to be greener
Yerrinbool Railway Garden
- Every Monday, Yerrinbool Railway Garden near the station, 10am-12pm
Residents are invited to explore this garden weekly. The community garden was founded by volunteers who wanted to grow healthy and fresh produce. There is also a mini market on the fourth Saturday of the month.
Railway Street fresh food and produce market
- Every Thursday, corner of Railway Street and Spring Street, 3-5.30pm
Grab fresh produce, plants, organic sourdough breads and more, which are made and grown in the Highlands.
Crop Swap Robertson
- Every Saturday, CTC Robertson, 9-10.30am
Exchange crops, plants and magazines at this weekly meet-up. People do not have to come with crops to take anything from the table. No money is exchanged. All are welcome.
Meeting others
Craft meet-ups
- Every Friday, Yerrinbool Hall, 11am - 2pm
People can bring along a craft project and chat with others in the hall. It does not matter what type of craft it is, and people can come along and just chat and have a cuppa.
Learning about the world
Royal Society of NSW Southern Highlands branch meeting: The antiquity of life
- March 21, Mittagong RSL (Carrington Room), 6.30-7.30pm
Professor Allen Nutman works in the School of Earth, Atmospheric, and Life Sciences at the University of Wollongong. His research focuses on the early development of Earth, the origin and growth of continents, the start of Plate Tectonics, and evidence for early life. He will discuss early evidence of life in this lecture.

Volunteering opportunities through Volwing
Volwing is the region's volunteer resource organisation, where people can make a difference in the community, learn new skills and make friends. There are various positions available that cater to many interests. They include teaching learners to drive, greeting tourists at museums, serving food, being a reading assistant at a primary school, and more.
