Terry Butt and Kevin Stafford defeated Peter Morales and Mick Flynn 35-11 in the final of the Handicap Pairs on Saturday (June 11).
This was one of the largest margin wins in a final at the club and an unbelievable result given Morales and Flynn had an eight-shot start. Played over 18 ends, Butt and Stafford won 15 of those ends.
Although the final was lopsided it was a credit to Butt and Stafford who played impeccable bowls throughout.
My only advice to the losers particular to Mick Flynn is not to play in a final after celebrating your 49th wedding anniversary. Next year with that big 50th coming up, steer clear of finals.
Also on the day, Terry Norwood Glen Giese Bob Crowley won the big money tournament with with two wins and one draw with a plus eight margin.
The matches, played over three games of eight ends, provided some keen bowling.
- Terry Norwood Glenn GieseBob Crowley - 2 wins, 1 draw, plus 8
- Peter Cornwell, Stephen Della, Carl Spilker - 2 wins, 1 loss, plus 6
- Graham Hartnup, Ian Crow Richard Denman - 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss minus 1
- Alex Lamb, Tony Oakes, Gordon Lewis - 1 win, 2 losses, minus 1
- Arnold Lenzcuk, Graham Hunt, Chris Forrester - 1 win, 2 losses, minus 4
- Andy Connor, Alistair McGhee, Dugald Braithwaite - 1win, 2 loss, minus 5
On May 22, Stephen Della won the Handicap Singles. The final turned out to be a marathon match that took 45 ends before Della could overcome a determined Alistair McGhee to win 31-29.
McGhee received a ten shot start but after six ends Della had eroded this by being on equal terms 1-1 and then took control of the match to go to a 16-4 lead after 17 ends only for McGhee to raise his game and really took the match in his favour.
he put a spurt on to take a 20-19 lead after 30 ends. Della then started to put pressure on McGhee and went to a 27-23 lead after 34 ends. But McGhee quickly hit back to trail 27-26 after 38 ends.
