And during the tough times, support for the village came in one of the unlikeliest places.
Balmoral Village residents Justin and Helena Kam's son Gabriel is a member of the Gondawana Choir and when the bushfires came through the town, many of the choir members came down to help not only the family, but to support the village.
Helena said the villagers were shocked and traumatised and had gathered at the Balmoral Fire Shed.
Terrible news continued to flood in.
The visiting choir members decided spontaneously to help by singing.
For a moment, everything stopped except for the young people's voices raised in song.
They provided the villagers with a happy moment among the devastation.
And their support did not stop there.
They held bake sales to raise funds for victims of the bushfires. Each time a donation was made, they would sing.
"Of their own initiative, they were out there raising awareness and supporting us as a family and Balmoral as a village," Helena said.
Now, The Gondawana Choir and Young Men's Choir plan to continue their efforts to raise awareness of the ongoing impacts the bushfires have had.
The choirs were planning to film a song on the Kam's property together with a collage of residents in different parts of the village.
Some members of the choir also planned to plant seedlings for regeneration of koala habitats, provided by council.
This was planned for last weekend, however the wet weather meant it had to be postponed.
Those involved in the choir had been keen to do this earlier in the year but had to wait due to the Covid pandemic.
'It's very much a story of hope and the amazing things they're doing," Helena said.
A date has not been finalised but she said the recording would go ahead in the future.
