In her inaugural season for the Southern Highland Storm, 2020 has been quite the debut for the captain.
Beginning her Rugby League career playing OzTag and then shifting to the Girl's League Tag competition, she took to full contact naturally.
Now, with a season under her belt, Hannah Whatman has been awarded the Group 6 player of the year.
Playing in the lock position, Whatman was nominated by referee points after every game.
Scoring no tries, or conversions all season, which is usually what attracts attention resulting in voting points, Whatman relied on her solid leadership, strong defence and all-rounder capabilities.
Only able to play only four games due to a COVID restricted season along with bye games, Whatman was surprised by the award.
"I certainly didn't expect this award, but I was delighted to receive it," Whatman said.
"It really is recognition of the whole team. They are a fantastic group of women and we had a terrific season together."
Showing girls that have a dream to step on the pitch one day, Whatman demonstrated you can expand your game and win awards without flash and pizzazz.
"I would encourage other girls to play Rugby League, there are so many opportunities to get fit, improve your skill, travel to other towns and it really is so much fun," Whatman said.
"If the opportunity arose to play in a professional capacity, I would certainly be very interested."

- Hannah Whatman.
Southern Highland Storm coach, George Gibson said it was an absolute joy to have Whatman on the team.
"Hannah is an exceptional person and a terrific athlete," Gibson said.
"She is well-spoken and a great communicator. I particularly value the way Hannah liaises between players and coaching staff.
"She leads by example and her teammates. I highly respect her for that."
