Year 12 student Tristan Maguire said he wanted to organise a Beanies for Brain Cancer fundraiser for some time and had a week to put it together.
"It's affected my family closely and I saw an opportunity to do something," he said.
"I really appreciated everyone bringing a beanie and gold coin because it wasn't compulsory.
"The school has raised $630 but we're trying to get to $1000."

Beanies for Brain Cancer was started by TV personality Carrie Bickmore after she lost her husband to the disease.
Carrie's Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation aims to raise desperately needed funds towards research into the horrible disease that is brain cancer.
