The decision came from an independent structural engineer who recommended the building be shut down immediately.
The structural integrity of the roof and walls have been compromised, with reports that that the ceiling has bowed. There is also a question of stability regarding the wall closest to the car park.
The call came at 4:37 pm and has left the Highlands Theatre Group scrambling to postpone its production of 'Anne of Green Gables' which was to open tonight October 25.
The Highlands Historical Society remains unaffected.
According to a council spokesperson, the premises consists of three separate buildings, the oldest of which was built in 1911, was combined in the 1960s and resulted in the removal of the middle internal walls in the back portion of the building.
The fault was discovered by council staff who were conducting a routine asset inspection. A new roof was considered for future works.
After the initial inspection, suspicions were heightened over the structural integrity of the building and an independent engineer was hired.
A council spokesperson said that the "timing was regrettable".
"We are working behind the scenes with the Highlands Theatre Group for alternative venues," he said.
"We apologise to any patrons."
An onsite inspection will be conducted today to discuss possible solutions. There is no timeline as of yet for when the repairs will begin.
The car park will be closed for the immediate time while engineers determine whether it is safe or not.
