The production was set to open tonight (October 25) but will now be postponed until further notice due to unforeseen circumstances.
Theatre group president Steve Cheers said the eleventh hour decision was made following a directive from Wingecarribee Shire Council regarding concern about the Mittagong Playhouse.
"At 5pm yesterday afternoon, October 24, we received notification from council, informing us that as a result of a structural engineer's inspection earlier that day, the Mittagong Playhouse has now been declared unsafe for public use," he said.
"As from 4:37pm yesterday, no one has been permitted to enter the auditorium and signs have been placed on the building to advise the public of such."
Ms McDonald said the Highlands Theatre Group would endeavour over the next few days, to seek an alternative venue for 'Anne of Green Gables' to be performed prior to Christmas.
"We will let you know as soon as possible," he said.
"Please be assured that your tickets remain valid, however if you require a refund, please email to ticketing@htg.org.au and advise us of the name and date on the tickets booked.
"As a small theatre company, we are devastated to inform you of these most unfortunate circumstances and we sincerely thank you for your support and understanding."
