Caitlin is one of hundreds of firefighters who will dash up the 1504 steps of 98-storey-high Sydney Tower as part of the annual Firefighters Climb for Motor Neurone Disease.
Like her colleagues, Caitlin, who works from Fire and Rescue NSW’s Schofields base in Sydney, will be climbing the 250m-tall tower in full structural gear weighing 20kg, including helmet, breathing apparatus and boots.
A special marathon row fundraising workout for the climb was held at Benton CrossFit’s gym in Braemar on Friday, October 12, with 80 people, including Benton members and CrossFitters from the broader region, gathering to row for charity.
Each team of four was tasked with reaching the marathon distance of 42km, which took most teams just under three hours to reach.
The rowing challenge raised $6000 for Motor Neuron Disease research.

In total, Caitlin has raised $13,500 for the tower climb.
Funds raised will go towards research into Motor Neurone Disease at Macquarie University.
Caitlin’s partner’s father, Jeff Cooper, has the disease and his experience has made the tower climb more poignant and motivating for her.
“I know what it’s like for Jeff to live with this disease so I’m determined to raise as much money as possible to find the cause and cure for MND,” Caitlin said.
“Organising the marathon event and raising so much money this year has, by far, been [one of] the most rewarding things I have ever done. The amount of support from all my friends, family and members of Benton Gym for a cause that’s so close to my heart is very overwhelming. Let’s hope we can find a cure soon for MND.”
