Exeter Village Association morning tea
- May 21, Exeter Village Hall, 10.30am
The Exeter Village Association aims to raise $1000 with this morning tea. Doctor Vincent Roche will be the guest speaker at the event, which will also include a delicious morning tea, raffle and lucky door prize. It is five dollars per person via Trybooking.
Southern Highland's Biggest Bake Off: Wilson Financial
- May 22, McGrath Hall at Chevalier College, 10am-1pm
Wilson Financial will hold its annual bake off in support of Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, which is run by the Cancer Council. Those who want to enter must drop their creations off during allocated times. Items entered will be eaten by attendees, and can be in the running for a people's choice award. They will be judged by staff at Gumnut Patisserie. There are four categories: adults (aged 17 and above), kids (ages three to 10), tweens (11 to 16-year-olds) and professional bakers. First, second, third place and people's choice will be awarded for each category.
There will be EFTPOS readers onsite, but payments will also be converted to plastic tokens to make the process quicker. The tokens can be recycled back to the main square reader desk, or can be bought prior. Pre-purchased tokens will be ready at the desk outside the McGrath Hall. There will also be a cash float on the day. All items are five dollars, but students can buy tokens for three dollars. Tokens, raffle tickets (one for five dollars, or three for $10), bake-off entries ($10 per entry) can be purchased through Trybooking. Donations and entries can also be made through wilsonfinancial.com.au. Raffle tickets can also be bought on the day.
Career expos
Careers Information Night
- May 22, Civic Centre Theatrette, 5.30-7pm
This free event is suitable for Year 9 to 12 students, 15 to 18-year-olds who are not studying and parents and carers. There will be the chance to connect with leading employers in the region and industry professionals from a variety of disciplines. Spots are limited, register through Trybooking.
Careers at council expo
- May 23, Moss Vale Civic Centre, 10am-1pm
This event is for Year 10 to 12 students to show them a variety of career options at Wingecarribee Shire Council, practical training opportunities and academic pathways in the community. There will be exhibits, and interactive workshops. The council has partnered with the University of Wollongong Southern Highlands campus and TAFE to provide information about courses, programs and qualifications for council-related professions. It is free to attend and registrations are not required.

Mobile Community Recycling Centre
This week, the free mobile community recycling centre will stop at Penrose Park on May 22, from 8.45am to 12.30pm.
Items that can be collected include:
- Small household and automotive batteries
- Waste oils
- Smoke alarms
- Cardboard
- Styrofoam
- Fluorescent lights
- X-rays
- Writing instruments
- Empty gas bottles
- Fire extinguishers
- Mobile phones
- Ink cartridges
World Turtle Day
- May 23
NSW is home to seven freshwater turtle species. Wingecarribee Shire Council has been working with researchers and the community to launch the Lake Alexandra Turtle Tour, which features five coreflute signs about what species to find. The council is also promoting the TurtleSAT app, where people can document their sightings of turtles in the area.
Justice of the Peace
Justice of the Peace volunteers will be at the following locations to help people with documentation weekly. It is a free service.
- Springett's Arcade: Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm
- The Jellore room at the Wingecarribee SC administration building: Thursdays from 10am to 1pm
- Mittagong Market Place: Saturdays from 10am to 1pm
Volunteering opportunities through Volwing
People can make a difference in the community, learn new skills and make friends through the volunteer resource organisation Volwing. Positions cater to a variety of interests. They include teaching learners to drive, serving food, being a reading assistant at a primary school, and more. Meeting others
Yerrinbool Railway Garden
- Every Monday, Yerrinbool Railway Garden near the station, 10am-12pm
People in the Highlands are invited to explore this garden, and help maintain it whenever they can. The community garden was founded by volunteers who wanted to grow healthy and fresh produce. There is also a mini market on the fourth Saturday of the month.
Activities at Mittagong Seniors
Mittagong Seniors hosts an array of activities at the Mittagong Senior Centre weekly. See the list below:
- Ukulele meet-up: Tuesday (9-11am) and Thursday (12.30-2pm)
- Board game sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30 to 11.30am
- Line dancing: Tuesdays from 11.15am to 12.30pm
- Mature movers gentle exercise classes: Thursdays 9.30am to 10.30am

People can bring along a craft project and chat with others in the hall. It does not matter what type of craft it is, and people can come along and just chat and have a cuppa.

Railway Street fresh food and produce market
- Every Thursday, corner of Railway Street and Spring Street, 3-5.30pm
Grab fresh produce, plants, organic sourdough breads and more, which are made and grown in the Highlands.
Crop Swap Robertson
- Every Saturday, CTC Robertson, 9-10.30am
Exchange crops, plants and magazines at this weekly meet-up. All are welcome. People do not have to come with crops to take anything from the table. No money is exchanged.
An Aboriginal playgroup
Gunamaragang Burraay Djindjingara (Little Child Stars) Playgroup
- Every Thursday, Community Links Centre: 6 Harper Close, Tahmoor
Community Links has established an Aboriginal-focused playgroup called Gunamaragang Burraay Djindjingara, which translates to Little Child Stars in Dharawal. The playgroup will focus on day-to-day activities and host cultural events and celebrations, which involve the broader community and showcase the richness of Aboriginal culture.
