With openings made for late entries Steve Window and Peter Hatch, the first of the field hit off at 7am in the near darkness of the final throes of daylight saving.
The first round saw Jonathan Baxter and Hamish Drake on 41 points leading a closely bunched field, with visitor David Morris and Ron Targett on 40, and a swag of golfers on 39 points.
Sunday's field was reduced to 39, with only those who had managed to put a decent enough score together the day before sniffing the chance of a win over the two rounds.
With illustrious names such as Maslen, Curley, Shakeshaft and Cameron taking to the course, competition was high and the winner could have come from anywhere.
With Jonathan Baxter withdrawing, the gifted Christine Irish compiled 37 points for a total of 71 and was positioned to take the cup should the others falter.
Targett began strongly and looked as though he might run away with the honours, but a number of poor middle holes saw him falter, until he regathered his swing, finishing the last four holes strongly and had done enough to be the clubhouse leader on 76 points.
The in-form Kris Narayan, who had 38 points on Saturday, was the biggest threat, with Rob Day and Brodie Smith close on his heels.
Narayan held off those challengers, but a double bogie on the 13th and another on 17 saw him fall short of a playoff by one point.
Targett was the winner and it was his first trophy at Moss Vale Golf Club.
Wednesday's Stableford was a one horse race, with Steve Crowe making the most of his 25 handicap, compiling 46 to blitz the field by four points.
Mario Cafarelli's brilliant 42 points would normally be a winning score, but he had to settle for second.
Third spot went to Peter Tancred who took a positive and cheerful outlook to the course and it paid off with a quality round.
The monthly medal and second round of the Captain's Cup had to be postponed to Saturday, April 13 as the heavy rain on Friday and early Saturday saturated the course, forcing its closure.
