The Bureau of Health Information has released its latest Healthcare Quarterly, which covers the activity and performance of hospitals across NSW, from October to December, 2023.
Almost 90 per cent of patients (87.8 per cent) started their treatments in the hospital's emergency department on time, in comparison to 68.6 per cent across the district.
For hospitals of a similar size across NSW, which are in peer groups in the data update, the average was 70.7 per cent in this period.
"All patients are seen and triaged on arrival at the ED and, as always, the most seriously unwell patients are treated first," a SWSLHD spokesperson said.
"During busy times, those with less urgent conditions can experience longer wait times when there are large numbers of seriously unwell patients being prioritised for emergency care."
The SWSLHD, which covers Bankstown-Lidcombe, Fairfield, Campbelltown and Liverpool Hospitals, had 48.8 per cent of patients leave the ED within four hours in comparison to 71.2 per cent in Bowral, and 63.2 per cent in its peer group.
"Nearly all patients (94.5 per cent) were transferred from ambulance to the ED within the 30-minute benchmark, which is also better than the average for comparable hospitals in NSW (89.6 per cent)," the spokesperson said.
What do patients think about the emergency department?
The latest data for the BHI's patient survey covers results from July, 2022 to June, 2023.
Sixty-nine per cent of patients in this period rated the care they received in the ED as "very good".
Seventy-one per cent rated the ED staff as "very good" and 87 per cent said they were treated with dignity and respect by staff.
