The national portrait prize has been running for more than 100 years in the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW), and has toured around many regional galleries.
This year, there are 57 finalists on display at the AGNSW, with many by regional artists.
Bowral artist Danie Mellor; who has also been a previous finalist in the Wynne and Sulman Prizes and Zoe Young, are among this year's finalists.
This is the third time Ms Young has been a finalist in the national prize.
This year's Packing Room Prize was awarded to Andrea Huelin for her portrait of comedian Cal Wilson.
Ms Monte confirmed the entire exhibition would be on display when it comes to the Highlands in late 2024.
The gallery has also been chosen to hold the Wynne Prize between now, and 2025.
