Creative Space Southern Highlands (CSSH) - an inclusive hub where people can learn new skills and make friends, held a series of workshops on March 8.
The first was led by visual artist and refugee Negin Chahoud, who invited women to take part in her Letters of Love project.
The community-led initiative gives people the chance to decorate a postcard however they choose, and then write an inspirational message.
For the Bowral resident, who originally came from Iran, the workshop on IWD reminded her that were many women could not celebrate.
"Being here and remembering that is so significant to me, I'm part of women who can't talk and have a voice right now," she said.
Women painted their cards and read them to the group.
Ms Chahoud hopes the cards can be added with others created over the years at her workshops, for a future exhibition.
CSSH team leader Tania McInnes said the event provided the opportunity to have positive discussions.
"When we think about inclusion, part of the reason to focus on inclusion with a capital I, is to make spaces for people to feel safe, completely welcomed and celebrated," she said.
"By creating a women's only event, there was potential to raise discussions and be open about inclusive definitions of women."
This year's IWD theme, which is embracing equity aligned with the space's ethos, the leader said.
Some of the workshops were held by people who utilised the space.
"We are also celebrating the talents of a diverse mix of creatives by putting on sessions," Ms McInnes said.
"It's a beautiful sharing of experiences and journeys for different people."
Julia is one creative who has exhibited, made friends and developed skills at the hub, and held a Mandala-inspired geometric drawing class.
"Personally to me, every day should be international women's day," she said.
Other workshops included bracelet weaving and a heart circle.
