His print Nattai River Landscape - Sloping Ground Diptych, created in 2021, was selected as the winner of the Swan Hill Print Drawing Acquisitive Awards.
It is being exhibited in the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery, in Victoria, with 52 other finalists.
The biennial competition champions innovative printmakers and drawers nationwide.
The artist and printmaker has entered the competition previously, and been chosen as a finalist several times in both categories.
"I found out I'd won by accident, I checked a video of the opening on Facebook to see who'd won, only to find out it was me," he said.
"I was honoured to have won the award, but also very pleased that a little piece of the history and landscape of the Nattai river valley is getting some interstate exposure."
The print is a reflection on Australian landscape artist Fred Williams' visit to the Nattai River in 1957, which inspired his future paintings.
"I felt that this diptych had several qualities - its message, the way it was made and its visual impact that might resonate with people," he said.
It has been exhibited in the Highlands, along with other artworks that Mr Ameneiro created to pay tribute to his visit, and the river's history.
"I hope that people get some sense of the beauty, spirituality and the fragility of the landscape conveyed," the artist said.
It is his third national accolade, along with being named the Fremantle Print Award winner in 2007, and Geelong Acquisitive Print Award in 2009.
He has been a three-time Dobell Drawing Prize finalist at the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW), and represented Australia in the Biennale Jogja VIII in Indonesia, and International Print Biennale in the United Kingdom.
His artworks have also been held in the British Museum, National Gallery of Australia, AGNSW, Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of South Australia and the State Library of Victoria.
The artist's prints have also been commissioned by the Print Council of Australia.
The artwork will be on display in Victoria until November 20, and the exhibition can be viewed online at 60gallerytours.com.au/art2022.
