Hill Top Soccer Club were named the Football South Coast Peter Webster Cup champions on September 14 after a thrilling penalty shoot-out against Dandaloo Football Club.
Despite several stop/start issues with bad weather down the coast, the Kookaburras, as they are also known, embarked on a great run of victories in the Community League Peter Webster Cup competition, resulting in the Kookaburras making the cup final.
Hill Top started the game strong, controlling the game tempo and had several chances on goal in the first half.
Mid-way through the first half, Hill Top's good work was rewarded, with Michael Heyhorn scoring a cracking goal from a free kick, bending it around the Dandaloo wall.
Hill Top led 1-0 at halftime.
However, the pendulum swung back Dandaloo's way in the early stages of the second half, with their pressure finally cracking Hill Top's defence - a beautifully constructed team goal by Dandaloo levelled the score at 1-1, 15 mins into the second half.
With 15 minutes remaining in the game, Dandaloo were awarded a penalty, which they duly converted into a 2-1 lead.
With 60 seconds left on the clock, Hill Top's Dylan Errington launched an audacious 30-meter shot from distance which curled into the top corner of the net beating the diving Dandaloo goalkeeper, equalising the game 2-2 much to the raptures of the visiting Hill Top supporters.
The game went immediately to a penalty shoot-out to decide the Cup winner.
Both Hill Top and Dandaloo were perfect from the penalty spot for an extended period, without recording a miss.
The penalty count reached 8-8 before one of the teams finally broke - one of Dandaloo's fullback's blazing his shot over the bar and missed, opening the door for the Kookaburra's.
Hill Top's Brian Montanari had the club's fate in his hands as he walked up and calmly slotted the 9th consecutive shot for the Kookaburra's - ultimately winning the shootout 9-8.
Hill Top Soccer Club's secretary Craig Napper said it was a tremendous achievement for the club.
"It's a night that will be etched into the memories of Hill Top players and supporters for many, many years," he said.
"This game was held at Kembla Grange under lights on Football South Coast's synthetic pitch, and represented our club's chance to win the most significant title and piece of silverware in the club's 40 plus year history."
Hill Top Soccer Club entered its two senior men's teams in the Football South Coast first grade competition at the start of the 2021 season.
COVID impacted the 2021 season which resulted in the competition finishing early. The club began 2022 in the Football South Coast competition with renewed enthusiasm and purpose.
