A weather warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on April 6, predicted that the region could cop 140 millimetres of rain on April 7 and 8.
A spokesperon for SES South-Eastern Zone confirmed that since the current extreme weather event began on Monday there have been 477 resquests for assistance, 350 of which have come since 12:00am on Thursday.
The heavy rainfall is expected to continue through to Friday evening at the very least with Illawarra currently being affected the most out of the South East Zone.
Earlier on Thursday a man was airlifted to safety from a raging, flooded creek near Kangaroo Valley after his car was washed off a causeway.
Emergency Services were called to a property off Walkers Lane, east of Kangaroo Valley around 11.20am after reports of a car stuck in a creek, with a person inside.
There are several road closures in the Southern Highlands as well as schools who have closed or are expected to.
Locals can also make use of self-filling sandbag stations in Bowral, Mittagong, Colo Vale, Moss Vale and Robertson. They are open today (April 7) and residents must bring their own shovels.
