Transport for NSW has indicated the Shoalhaven's vital link road to the Highlands could reopen in six months' time.
However, restoring the entire length of Moss Vale Rd to pre-flood condition could take up to two years,
The timeframe is based on early estimates from specialists who are assessing damage and planning repairs to the section of road, north-west of Kangaroo Valley township.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said rebuilding after February's landslide is a huge and complex job.
"Transport for NSW is working to keep roads open, however the slope issues on Barrengarry Mountain are complex and we have engaged specialist workers to assess the damage and plan repair work.
"This repair work is significant and we are anticipating it could take up to six months to restore access to Barrengarry Mountain. This timeline may change as further assessments are carried out.
"We will continue to keep the community updated on progress and thank them for their patience."
As another bout of wet weather lashes the South Coast, Transport for NSW expects further impacts to roads around the region.
"More than a dozen state roads across the south coast have been impacted by the extreme weather event and further damage is expected over the coming weeks," the spokesperson said.
Road access to Kangaroo Valley remains possible from the south-east. All routes from this direction are open, including escorted access via Moss Vale Rd at Cambewarra Mountain.
Local business owners have previously praised the 24/7 escort service and urged travellers to visit the area, which remains open for business.
In the meantime, motorists looking to get to the Highlands will need to take lengthy detours, outlined by Transport for NSW.
Detours are in place via Hume Mwy, Picton Rd and Princes Hwy.
Light vehicles can also use Jamberoo Mountain Rd, adding up to 30 minutes to travel times. Vehicles over 10 metres, vehicles over 12 tonnes, buses and vehicles towing caravans of any size need to detour via Hume Mwy, Picton Rd and M1 Princes Mwy, adding up to 60-90 minutes to travel times.
Transport for NSW is also investigating options to carry out maintenance work on Hampden Bridge while the road is closed, to avoid further closures once roads reopen.
