The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in conjunction with Wingecarribee Shire Council will be accepting unwanted chemicals as part of its annual Chemical Clean Out program on Sunday, March 28.

Chemicals that can be dropped off include residential quantities (20 kilogram or 20 litre maximum container size) of:
- Household cleaners
- Fluorescent globes and tubes
- Car and household batteries
- Motor oils and fluids
- Paints
- Garden, pool and hobby chemicals
- Gas bottles, fire extinguishers
- Poisons
The call to properly dispose of used household chemicals follows recent incidents involving dumped substances.
Council's manager of the environment and sustainability Barry Arthur said council had responded to a number of calls where chemicals had been dumped in wastewater and storm water networks.
"The first incident was picked up within the Mittagong Sewage Treatment Plant while the second occurred when chemicals were detected in the stormwater system in East Bowral near the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens.
"While both incidents were managed and contained, the potential consequences to public health and the immediate environment could have been far worse," he said.
"It's imperative that used or unwanted chemicals are properly disposed of and never poured down drains or sinks."
Council's Moss Vale Depot can be entered via Parkes Road, Moss Vale. Residents are reminded that the Works Depot is not located within the grounds of the nearby Resource Recovery Centre.
Council's Chemical CleanOut is a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy and supported by council's environment levy.
