But last weekend that all changed when the gallery opened its doors once more to the Highlands community.
Bowral and District Art Society (BDAS) members have been busy during the Covid shutdown and it is their works currently on display at the gallery.
The winter exhibition will run until August 23.
Following this will be the View from the Coast exhibition.
A collection of works from 21 artists from the Illawarra Association for the Visual Arts, the exhibition includes paintings, drawings and sculptures and will run from August 27 until September 8.
BDAS committee secretary Helen Johnston said after this would be an exhibition called Pressgang put together by Bowral printmakers and would run from September 10-15.
The exhibition will showcase a range of printmaking techniques including etchings, linocuts, monoprints and photopolymer prints.
Later this year will be the John Copes Portrait Prize which Ms Johnston said always received a high standard of entries.
This year it will run from September 19 and will be judged by Ben Quilty, with the opening night and presentation on September 18.
While the gallery only recently reopened, Ms Johnston said they had plenty of people through the doors over the weekend.
Visitors have been encouraged to practice social distancing and Ms Johnston said there was a restricted number of people now allowed in the gallery at one time.
A sculpture garden has just been completed, which features works from local artists.
As well as the many exhibitions throughout the year, Ms Johnston said there was plenty happening that the local community was often unaware of.
Classes and weekend workshops run at The Bowral Art Gallery throughout the year.
"There's all sorts of things happening if people look at the website," she said.
"It's been good to have it [the gallery] open again. People have been very enthusiastic."
