The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released the figures on August 7, which was collected data between 2014 to 2018.
Dementia (including Alzheimer's disease) is the number one cause of death for women, while coronary heart disease is the leading cause of mortality for men.
The second highest cause for women was coronary heart disease followed by cerebrovascular disease.
Cerebrovascular disease and dementia (including Alzheimer disease) rounded out the top three causes of death for men.
The median age of death for men has improved from 79 years in 2014 to 81 years in 2018.
However the median age of death for women dropped from 85 years to 84 years.
There were 413 premature deaths for men under 75 from 2014 to 2018, and 256 premature deaths for women.
Of these premature deaths, there were 200 potentially avoidable deaths for men and 109 deaths for women.
