Sarah Schoeffler found Kevin Wellings near the Bong Bong Track over the June long weekend and promptly called the ambulance.
She was aided by cyclist Peter Donaldson.
Ms Schoeffler said that it was a cold, foggy morning and approximately minus one degrees Celsius when she found Mr Wellings.
Not one to seek attention, Ms Schoeffler said that she would help anyone in need.
"He couldn't get up by himself," she said.
"I was just at the right time there and found him, I'm very sorry that he passed away.
"My deepest condolences to the family."
Ms Schoeffler is orginally from Germany and is currently studying a Diploma for Early Childhood Education and Care.
The Wellings family had reached out to the Southern Highland News to find the person who had assisted their brother and to personally thank them.
