Illawarra Business Chamber Executive Director Adam Zarth said that the benefits of the decision will flow through to around 20,000 tradies across the Illawarra.
"I welcome today's announcement that the NSW Government will waive license fees for our hardworking trades and construction workers, who are an important remaining operable part of the Illawarra economy in the current lockdown," Mr Zarth said.
"There are 19,665 tradespeople and related workers in the Illawarra who stand to benefit from this announcement, comprising 15.4 percent of our workforce; a higher proportion than the state average.
"The construction sector, along with manufacturing and mining, is one of the key sectors that must be kept operating through the pandemic lockdown, and where possible, allowed to grow so that it can employ workers from other sectors that have been put into effective hibernation.
"We expect future government spending on construction projects to be a core component of our economic recovery.
"With the NSW Government having recently set aside an additional $500 million to bring forward 'shovel-ready' infrastructure projects aimed at stimulating the state economy, it is reassuring that the Illawarra construction sector and its workforce are supported in the interim."
