The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other respiratory viral infections or the flu.
Infected children may present with fever, runny nose, sore throat and cough. Some have gastro symptoms with nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.
Often children may have the virus but show no symptoms.
There is no cure, antibiotics or special treatment.
A small number of young children will need oxygen, intravenous drip or more intensive respiratory support. Adolescents are at slightly higher risk and may develop pneumonia.
The biggest problem here is the risk of the child spreading the infection to an older person who may become very unwell.
Children should be kept at home. Treat fever with paracetamol and give adequate fluids.
Routine viral testing is not needed and will not be routinely performed.
If your child becomes more unwell contact health direct 1800 022 222 or your GP.
Always phone your GP before visiting.
Protect yourself and family during this very stressful period.
Keep physical distance from others, avoid public places, wash your hands and do not touch your face after touching other surfaces.
