A painter by trade and a racer at heart, Highlands Andy Harris recently competed in the Wakefield 300 with his co-driver, Todd Herring.
The duo went into the race confident after last year's efforts, but it wasn't a Sunday drive.
"We drove in the Sydney 300 Cup last year and won it," Harris said.
"Todd gave me a call and asked if I was keen to drive in a series of 300. We were the driving a Mazda MX-5 turbo and the car handled and felt really good.
'Engine wise the car didn't miss a beat. Towards the end of the race, the tyres were shot, but we got it home for a great result."
That wasn't the only problem the duo had. The night before the Sunday race, the car required a whole gear-box change over, but like on the track, they kept a cool head.
"Todd's a mechanic and knows his cars back to front," Harris said.
"The clutch that went in the car was actually better and more heavy-duty. There were minor issues on the Sunday race day with adjustments. The pick up point on the clutch was too low, we couldn't actually change gears probably, but once we adjusted the clutch pedal, it was all sweet."
Harris and Herring qualified first and sat on pole for the race. They knew they were in for a battle though.
"Todd did the fastest lap on his last qualifying lap to get us pole,"
"It works like Formula One qualifying. As long as you make the top 20% you'll make the last session. It's all about aiming to make that final session. I did the first two sessions and Todd did the last.
"You could only use one set of tyres each session and couldn't re-fuel. That keeps it grass-roots and competitive."
As the chequered flag greeted them as they crossed the line, Harris and Herring finished first in their class and second outright on the day.
"Towards the end we were driving to the tyres," Harris said.
"There wasn't really much we could do. If we had a healthier set we may have been able to push for first.
"The last 50 laps the tyres were stuffed! (laughs).
"The last 20 laps, it was a bit of a handful to hang onto her, but most other cars would have been struggling.
"It was so close, so it could have went either way. If we had a bit of a better strategy we could of maybe got by them.
"But for the championship it puts us right up there."
