Born on October 16 1919 in Strathfield, NSW, Nerida Young or Joan as she prefers, was the youngest of five children.
The Bowral House resident who was dressed for the occasion celebrated her birthday in style with friends and family and cut the cake that specially made for her.
Her son John said that he "never had a doubt" that his mother would live to 100 and that she lived a remarkable life.
Joan attended secretarial college and went on to work at Burgess paints where she met her husband David.
She and David went on to have one son John and in 1961 they built a new home in Strathfield where they lived for 30 years and traveled extensively for David's work at an advertising agency.
"She's been a fabulous mother for 70 years," said her son John.
"She's led a remarkable life.
"Up until 97 she had her drivers licence and would drive.
"She's always loved cars and had one of the first GTS Monaro's and had some beautiful cars."
An avid golf lover, Joan played golf for over 50 years until the age of 90. Joan also played the piano at Sunday School for over 30 years and continues to play at Bowral House.
Asked what her secret to a long life is, Joan was humble about her achievement.
"I don't know," she said.
"I guess I have an interest in people and like them and it's given me a long life."
Her big birthday celebration was marked with a letter from Her Royal Majesty the Queen, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, The Governor General David Hurley, Member for Hume Angus Taylor and Minister for Veterans and Defence personell Darren Chester.
Joan will have a larger birthday celebration with family and friends on Saturday.
Joan is a grandmother to two grandsons and two great grandchildren.
