Transport for NSW has asked families who have had fun in the snow to make sure their trip home was as safe and as enjoyable as possible.
Southern region director Brendon James said families departing the alpine region in the next few days should take care and plan their trip.
"End of school holidays is a high risk time on alpine roads, with large volumes of traffic, greater fatigue and unfamiliar conditions," Mr James said.
A Bowral resident who traveled from Goulburn to Mittagong on July 21 said traffic slowed down to 80km/h on the Hume Highway due to the large number of motorists returning home from the snow.
Transport for NSW has put together some tips to help the whole family get home safely.
- Check your car is ready for the journey home - this includes checking tyres and air pressure, engine oil, lights and brakes.
- Drive to the conditions - limit your braking on icy roads so you don't spin and always keep a safe distance from the car in front.
- Rest and then rest some more. It's important that you use rest stops and be aware of fatigue, especially if you've got up extra early to try to beat the traffic. It's better to arrive home late and safe, than not at all.
"Motorists also need to take care when driving at night, dawn or dusk, and be aware of black ice which is difficult to see and can remain on the road even during fine days," Mr James said.
"It's important to stay alert for wildlife on the road, especially at dusk.
"Drive to the conditions, plan ahead and allow additional travel time to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely and efficiently."
