Members of the St Paul’s International Robotics Club went down to Melbourne to compete in the VEX EDR and VEX IQ Australian National Championships from December 1-2.
A total of 17 students participated from St Paul’s, who fielded a total of three senior (EDR) and one junior (IQ) team at the competition.
The junior IQ team, in their first year in the competition, performed consistently throughout the tournament and was successful in winning the Amaze Award with their robot ‘Mantis’.
The Amaze Award is presented to a team that has built an amazing, high-scoring robot that clearly demonstrates overall quality.
Key criteria of the award includes:
- Robot design is consistently high scoring
- Robot demonstrates a solid mechanical design and is robustly constructed to fulfill its designed task
- Robot programming is consistently effective and successful
- Students understand and explain how they worked together to develop their robot
Two of the senior EDR teams finished just outside of the qualification bracket for the semi-finals (17th and 18th out of 51 teams).
It was a great result for the school, with most students commencing robotics this year.
The all girls team (Year 8 and 9) which finished 18th out of 51 teams in their first year competing also attended the inaugural ‘girl powered’ workshop, which discussed career paths for girls in STEAM careers.
