Chief Inspector John Sheehan from the Goulburn Police said motorists must drive to the conditions.
“You need to consider reducing your speed to ensure you have enough braking distance between yourself and the vehicle in front,” Chief Inspector Sheehan said.
Police are also reminding drivers to not enter floodwater, or cross flooded causeways.
The major cause of death during floods is by people entering floodwater.
Find an alternate route and avoid unnecessary travel.
There are substantial penalties for persons who disregard road closed signs or enter flood waters causing a danger to themselves or passengers.
Chief Inspector John Sheehan said “if it’s flooded, don’t risk it”.
“On too many occasions emergency services must put themselves at risk to rescue drivers who make the stupid decision to enter flood waters and then become trapped,” he said.
“The police will have a zero tolerance to this behaviour and you can expect hefty fines for those that take this risk.”
There is also the potential for NSW Police, Ambulance, Fire and Rescue, State Emergency Service (SES), Rural Fire Service (RFS) and the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) to be roadside with their red and blue lights flashing.
If you see emergency services on the road reduce your speed to 40km an hour.
