The Southern Highlands Domestic Violence Forum organised the initiative to bring the wider community together around the issue of tackling male violence against women.
Around 100 people attended the walk, more than organisers had anticipated for the first-time event which surprised and delighted White Ribbon Ambassador Garry Ponder.
“It is fabulous to be a part of a community that takes this issue seriously. It all starts with respect. Boys need to learn how to respect girls so when they’re men they’ll respect women,” Mr Ponder said.
“Not all lack of respect ends up in domestic violence but the cycle of violence always starts with a lack of respect,” he said.
Southern Highlands Domestic Violence Forum president Julie Roberts said the event was an attempt to promote a “collective community spirit supporting all that White Ribbon stands for.”
Following the walk, members of the Bowral Lions Club provided a sausage sizzle breakfast for participants.
The forum’s main fundraising event, a golf day day at Highlands Golf Club in Mittagong, is set for White Ribbon Day this Sunday, November 25.
The golf day day, named ‘Extra Respect: Keeping relationships on PAR, will raise funds to provide assistance, education and awareness in the Southern Highlands community. Tickets are $40, including lunch.
