The contribution is an initiative of Komatsu (previously Joy Global) staff which has been “decades-in-the-making”, according to Mr Irvin.
“Planning started about 40 years ago. It was for blokes who got hurt at work or who got injured outside of work and also for those who got sick,” Mr Ivins said.
Mr Irvins said the “sick fund constitution” stated from the start that it had to go to the hospital and this is the department Komatsu staff decided to support.
“When we formed the committee we had an agenda that the money had to go to the hospital, that was part of the big deal and so here we are today.”
Employees voluntarily donated $2 a week towards the fundraising effort.
Bowral and District Hospital general manager Joel Bardsley said part of the donation would go towards redeveloping the resuscitation bay.
“New equipment, set up and layouts that will be similar to our new resus bay will be in the new build.
“Any remaining funds will be used on equipment for our new Emergency Department.”
“We are very lucky that we have a personal partnership [with Komatsu]. One of our nurses is married to one of the company’s long-standing employees,” Mr Bardsley said.
Bowral Hospital staff see all sorts of workplace injuries through the emergency department, both big and small.
“Most common workplace injuries are usually slips, trips and falls,” Mr Bardsley said.
