Council’s acting team leader ranger services, Brooke Dawson, said in the last three months the council has received 31 reports of dog attacks.

“It’s important to remember that not everyone is at ease around dogs,” said Ms Dawson. “People should feel safe in our community without risk of being approached by unknown, unleashed dogs.”

Ms Dawson explained that no matter what the breed or temperament, if dogs are not on a leash there is a chance they could attack another person or animal.

“No one wants to be responsible for injuries caused to another person or animal,” she said. “Especially to a child or an elderly person.”

Council rangers are patrolling known hotspots and issuing penalty notices for non-compliance with the Companion Animals Act 1993.

Penalties range from $330 for the owner, or person in charge of a dog not under effective control in a public place, and up to $1,320 if that dog rushes at, chases, bites, attacks or harasses another person or animal.

Council reminds dog owners that three dog-friendly parks have been set up where owners can exercise their pets off leash. Visitors should check the signage at each park or visit council’s website to familiarise themselves with their responsibilities as a dog owner.

“We’ve also installed dog waste dispensers in these parks to encourage residents to clean up after their pooch,” said Ms Dawson.

“Dog owners should carry a doggy bag with them at all times or risk a $275 fine.”
