For more than 30 years Southern Highlands Christian School’s commitment to growing knowledge, character, service and leadership has laid a firm foundation for many young men and women. Their dedicated Christian staff, who value each student as a unique individual, seek to foster these key aspects of education in all students from prep to Year 12.
“An opal is an amazing thing. At heart, it is comprised of silica; not too far removed from quartz, or even common sand. But put it in the right place and add just a little pressure – suddenly, the everyday becomes the miraculous; an explosion of light and colour, simultaneously intertwining diversity and unity. Is it any wonder it is Australia’s national gemstone.
Thirty-five years ago, something similar happened in the Southern Highlands. A small group of people were inspired to take a risk and put their money where their mouth was. They were members of the local community, Highlands born and bred, shaped like so many others by the rolling hills, the sharp winters, and the natural splendour of our mountain home. Yet, they were distinct at the same time. They believed in the fledgling Christian Schools movement, and sought to enrich the multicultural face of Australia through the expression of their shared beliefs.

One of the defining features of the Christian faith is servanthood, and this value was surely in the hearts of those founders. Yet on that morning in 1983, when a single teacher stood in a tiny, wooden church hall before a grand total of seven enrolments, could anyone have imagined the blessings to come? Would they have believed that those grains of sand would become the opalescent institution of 2018?
As we gathered to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Southern Highlands Christian School on May 6, 2018 we recognised the blessing and service of generations who had gone before, we felt both humility and gratitude. The diversity of participants symbolised the collaborative approach to distinctive education – from SHCS student Taleia Lacey, granddaughter of SHCS’s first canteen lady, to former school captain-cum-current primary teacher Pru Dubokovich-Lucic, to SHCS founding parents Bill and Penny Galbraith. Each of them individuals, from different backgrounds and eras, yet all unified by the colourful community of Southern Highlands Christian School.
We are proud to celebrate 35 years of history. And we are also excited to look to the future. Just like an opal, as we turn to face the light, we pray our unity and diversity will craft more unexpected beauty from the ordinary.”
