Ms Barnett will play the very engaging and energetic Haydn Cello Concerto in C. Haydn composed this concerto in the 1760s but the score was lost and not re-discovered until 1961.
Catherine holds a Licentiate Diploma from the Guildhall School of Music, London and performs and teaches in the Southern Highlands.
The concerts will open with Wagner’s dazzling overture to the opera Rienzi which encapsulates all the orchestral brilliance and melodic splendour of grand opera – even though the opera itself is rarely performed today.
Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 is yet another composition that enjoyed a “re-discovery”. It was written in 1841 but never performed as Schumann then plunged into a prolific period of composing songs and compositions for piano.
He re-visited it in 1851 and made a number of major changes in orchestration. The symphony now contains some of the most inspired passages in all of Schumann’s symphonies.
The SHSO Series 3 Concerts will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, September 16 at 2:30 PM at the Memorial Hall, Bendooley Street, Bowral.
Tickets available online at www.trybooking.com/WDZK or www.shso.org.au or at Destination Southern Highlands, Mittagong or Powerpoint Music Store 409 Bong Bong Street, Bowral.
