A local falls prevention group referred her to receive domestic assistance services.
She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis shortly after and her existing epilepsy became more severe.
It was at this point that Trish required additional support services from Interchange Australia.
Trish continues to live in her own home with her beloved cats, Lilly and Gracie, and now receives a wide range of support services.
These include domestic assistance and personal care, as well as supported outings to the shops, medical appointments and to a local pool for weekly swimming sessions.
Trish recently travelled with a support worker to Sydney to visit friends.
She has also been supported to visit Canberra on two occasions, once to the War Memorial, and recently to the Cartier Exhibition.
Trish also enjoys watching movies at the local cinema.
“I really look forward to my carers coming each day…They are my main social connection,” says Trish.
“Interchange match the carers they assign to services so well, they are responsive, reliable and provide stability. I used to work as a nurse and I know how support services should be delivered.
“The carers are so friendly and it’s so nice to be able to talk with someone, they keep me up-to-date with what’s happening in the world. It’s important for me to have something to think about, so I’m not focusing on my health issues so much.”
Trish is making the most of her supports under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and it is these supports that assist Trish to connect socially and to remain living independently.
