Artist Robyn Kinsela painted many portraits of Highland Vietnam veterans for a display on Vietnam Veterans Day.
Now, her efforts have allowed her to win the St George Art Award, with a composite artwork made up of six of the portraits.
The theme of the exhibition was ‘Reflection’, and Ms Kinsela said she was happy that her interpretation of the theme differed from other entrants.
“While many artists seemed to go for water/glass/mirror/wet image, I am very happy that my interpretation of ‘reflection’ as introspection by [myself and Kim Shannon] as well as the vets, has made a mark,” she said.
“Kim and I are thrilled to be able continue to bring these guys to the attention of the broader public, and this win helps.”
Ms Kinsela said she felt privileged to have painted the men, and to have heard their stories.
“Many of us at home were conscientious objectors and marched in moratoriums against this war. This exhibition is not about that - it is about them,” she said.
“After 50 years, we are finally able to reflect on and share without recrimination, some of our earlier attitudes and activities.
“Their stories, their experiences and their memories have been fascinating.”
