But one local boy did just that as part of the '6 Worthy Weeks' program.
Fifteen-year-old Ben Brownlee-Roberts recently completed 10 hours volunteering at Harbison Care.
"I've always been interested in child care, so I did this to gain experience," Ben said.
"I now have a sense of looking after people one-on-one and in groups."
Giving up his Saturdays, Ben instructed exercises, reading and discussion sessions, assisted with bingo and helped provide morning tea.
Diversional therapist at Harbison Care Josie Peacock said she had received some "lovely feedback" from residents.
"Ben was an absolute joy and pleasure to have at Harbison Care, and the residents and staff really enjoyed his visits," she said.
"We wish him all the best with his future endeavours.
"He'll go a long way with that kind of determination, dedication and commitment."
Ben has planned to volunteer at a childcare centre for the next round of 6 Worthy Weeks in June.
6 Worthy Weeks is a program run by Argyle Housing for 14-to-19-year-olds.
Communications and marketing officer for Argyle Housing Anne Holdsworth said everyone was pleased with how successful the program was.
"We are really pleased with how the youth have embraced this initiative, devised their challenges and jumped in with enthusiasm," she said.
"Big thanks to the nib foundation for their support and making this all possible."
The program has been designed to inspire youth in community housing to notice others in need.
Participants must commit a minimum of 10 hours over six weeks to their chosen volunteering program.
