Dave Lorentz said the 95 points in the Riesling Single Vineyard category was a great honour considering the amount of wines in the field and the fact that the only other gold medal went to one of Australia's largest wine producers with a long history of awards.
"It's up there with the biggest wins we have had for our wines, and with the resurgence in popularity of this varietal, it's obviously creating a lot of interest in our cellar door,' he said
Mr Lorentz said the remarkable thing about the Riesling 2014 was what a complex and fresh wine had been made in a year when rain dampened the spirits of many a local winemaker.
"It's got a powerful middle palate and long length so will age to perfection for those who love that style - like I do," he said.
The wine was made in the Southern Highlands by Anton Balog and is available at the newly-opened Cherry Tree Hill cellar door on the Hume Highway in Sutton Forest.
The Lorentz family has owned this property for more than 35 years with approximately 35 hectares under vine.
Meticulous vineyard management has produced fruit that reflects the Southern Highlands particular cool climate and soil types and is being added to more wine lists around the country.
Their first vintage in 2003 marked the beginning of a long line of awards for this winery and this recent win is certain to bring great interest to the winery and the Southern Highlands wine industry.
