Diabetes Australia CEO Professor Greg Johnson said Type 2 Diabetes is one of the biggest threats to the health and productivity of all Australians.
"Around 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. Walking and other forms of physical activity, combined with healthy eating and maintaining a healthy weight is 'just what the doctor ordered' for both the prevention and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes, " he said.
Former Ironman Guy Leech said health and fitness isn't about going to extremes.
"Small changes like walking regularly can make a really big difference when it comes to improving your long-term health and wellbeing," he said."
"I hope this initiative will encourage people to find a healthier way to get to work."
Dietician Joanne McMillan said walking also works to prevent stroke and heart disease.
"It's also one of the easiest forms of exercise to build into our busy daily lives, and when joined with healthy eating, it's a relatively simple approach to shed those excess kilos," she said.
During Mental Health Week, Pedestrian Council chairman Harold Scruby also highlighted the impact of walking to mental health.
"Regular walking can help relieve feelings of depression or anxiety and improve our environment by reducing car dependency and traffic jams," he said.
"People who walk before and during work are generally healthier, more productive and creative and are less likely to be absent or take sick leave."
