Michael Goodridge was arrested and charged on Saturday night after the 39-year-old woman’s body was found in a disused railway building in Argyle Street, behind Moss Vale train station, shortly after 12.30pm.
The 52-year-old has also been charged with tampering with evidence.
It is understood the pair had been staying in what was an old signals hut for a short time together, but police said there was no evidence that the pair’s relationship went beyond a friendship.
The post-mortem examination of Ms George was being conducted in Sydney yesterday or today and police said it would give them a clearer indication of the cause of Ms George’s death.
Bowral detectives, part of strike force Nangor, established with members of the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, are calling for witnesses who may have seen the pair together in the week leading upto Ms George’s death to come forward.
Police are trying to establish the movements of the pair between Tuesday and Saturday afternoon when the NSW Ambulance Service found the body.
Goulburn local area command crime manager Detective Inspector Ward Hansen said the disused cottage and surrounding area was still cordoned off as a crime scene.
Inspector Hansen said members of the Public Order Riot Squad and the Operations Support Group, who specialise in searches, were currently conducting an extensive search of the area.
Strike force Nangor has 10 detectives working on the ground, with five Bowral and four Goulburn detectives involved.
Inspector Hansen said four investigators from the State Crime Command were made available to Goulburn Police for the first 72 hours of the investigation.
Forensic investigators from Wollongong and fingerprint experts were also on the scene.
Not much information has been released about Mr Goodridge.
