Highlands CWA members celebrate a century of 'selfless' work

A century later, women from across the Southern Highlands gathered in Moss Vale to reflect on a job well done.

The morning tea and plaque unveiling at Leighton gardens was a resounding success with memories exchanged, laughs shared and plenty of food enjoyed.

Amongst the numerous photos and nibbles was also an opportunity for Highlands-based CWA branch members to get a word in with politicians with both state and federal members Wendy Tuckerman and Stephen Jones joining the festivities.

Also in attendance was NSW CWA President Stephanie Stanhope who made her second trip to the region in a matter of weeks after attending the 100^th anniversary celebration of Crookwell CWA branch, the oldest in the state.

Addressing the crowd in windy conditions, Wingecarribee Shire Council Interim Administrator praised the many generations of members in the Highlands.

"We join today not only to acknowledge the 100^th anniversary of the formation of your iconic organisation but to acknowledge the legacy your forebears have left on this shire," he said.

"Over the years there have been a number of different branches but I'm told the Bowral branch was the first in the Highlands and formed just three years after the meeting of the Bush Women's conference in Sydney in 1922.

"Members over the years in this shire have dedicated thousands of hours of selfless work towards improving the Highlands community.

"Your efforts do not go unnoticed."

Visitors can now check out the plaque, located near the gazebo in Leighton Gardens.
