One of the first mass-participation events back since the 2021 NSW COVID lockdown, the Gran Fondo cycling event will attract over 3500 cyclists to the region.
Now a multi-event cycling festival, this year will see the addition of two exciting events to be held on Saturday 11 December. These include the Dirty Bowral 'Gravel-Plus' ride through the Belanglo State Forest, and a Criterium ride around Loseby Park in Bowral.
Sunday December 12 will see the return of the much-loved Gran Fondo rides through the Southern Highlands. Cyclists come from across the country to participate in one of four road cycling events: the 150km Maxi Classic, 120km Challenge Classic, 85km Rouleurs Classic or 35km Social Classic.
The courses have been designed to showcase the best of the region, passing through the rolling hills of Bowral, Berrima, Sutton Forest, Robertson and Kangaloon.
NSW Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said the return of the much-loved event was a great result for the visitor economy of the Southern Highlands.
"With its picturesque highlands and incredible cycling routes that attract enthusiasts from across the country, the Bowral Classic is a staple fixture in the cycling calendar," Mr Ayres said.
"It has been a challenging two years in regional NSW and we know these events are vital to our social and economic recovery. We are delighted to support the Bowral Classic to help turbocharge the local economy and I congratulate the organisers for getting this great event back up and running."
The Gran Fondo ride will start from 6:30am on Bong Bong St, Bowral and finish at Loseby Park, Bowral. There will be limited road closures around the surrounding streets of Loseby Park on Saturday December 11, and then throughout the Southern Highlands on Sunday, December 12.
Locals are encouraged to stay off the roads when possible and be mindful of cyclists. Full road closure details are available online at www.bowralclassic.com.au/community.
Want in on the action? Come down to the Event Village at Loseby Park on Saturday, December 11 from 1:30pm - 6:30pm to catch the action of the Criterium Race, grab a bite to eat and enjoy a cold drink from the bar.
The Event Village will also be open Sunday, December 12, 9am - 4pm where supporters can cheer on the riders as they cross the finish line. There will be something for everyone - gourmet food stalls, live music, exhibitor stalls and children's entertainment.
The Bowral Classic will be a COVID Safe event, working within the guidelines as advised by NSW Health. A COVID Safe Plan will also be implemented to ensure the safety of all riders, volunteers, and the local community.
