Ms Berejiklian resigned on Friday afternoon after the Independent Commission Against Corruption announced an investigation regarding issues around her relationship with former MP Daryl Maguire.
She said she chose to resign rather than stand down due to the potential length of the inquiry.
Mr Ward was a member of the Liberal Party until May this year, when he moved to the cross benches over a NSW Police investigation.
Mr Ward has denied any wrongdoing.
"Gladys has always held herself to the same standards to which she held others and she has decided to take this action based on her ethos around what is ethically appropriate," Mr Ward said.
"I think she's been an exceptional Premier and I think history will judge her very well. Not withstanding that there has been a further enquiry announced but people are innocent until proven otherwise.
"I know that she is someone who has steered this state through very difficult times and I think people will not forget that in a hurry."
