At a press conference this afternoon NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said this was the "scariest period" NSW had faced since the start of the pandemic.
"My level of concern is medium to high," she said.
"But of the new cases today, all but one is linked. We expect more new cases in the coming days.
"This is a very contagious variant but at the same time we are at this stage comfortable that the settings that are in place are the appropriate settings, but that is so long as everybody does the right thing.
"Please know that wearing a mask does not mean you are protected from the virus.
"We have always said that mask wearing is the fourth line of defence was up you need to socially distance, you need to hand sanitise, you need to make sure that every time you go out of your home and you are thinking about your movements, that you are COVID safe and of course now, we have increased mask wearing in certain situations which is extremely important.
"Please know that if you are symptomatic and put a mask on, it doesn't mean you are not going to transfer the virus to others.
"We have had situations where people have symptoms, they are not getting tested and putting a mask on and think they are OK, it is not OK."
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant wants to see the testing levels maintained on the 48,000 mark, or surpassed, continually for the next week.
She said all but one of the new cases were linked.
New venues of concern alerted by NSW Health include Crown Hair in Kings Cross on Tuesday, June 22, from 9am to 5p. Anybody who attended is a close contact and must immediately call NSW Health on 1800 943 553, get tested and isolate for 14 days, regardless of the result.
NSW Health is continuing to ask anyone who was in Westfield Bondi Junction (including the car park), particularly Fitness First, at any time between June 12 and 18 to get tested for COVID-19.
