Winner Lucy Irvine aims for a career in nursing or paramedicine so she may bring comfort and happiness to people in need.
The annual scholarship is awarded to a Year 12 student from the Wingecarribee Shire who plans to undertake a health-related course at university.
After her sister was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, Lucy was particularly moved by the role of nurses in her care.
"Seeing everything the nurses did to ensure my sister was comfortable and cared for was really inspiring," she said.
"Nursing and paramedicine are both careers which allow you to help others and bring them comfort and happiness.
"I want to pursue a career that is challenging and makes a difference in people's lives."
The former Chevalier College student is starting a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Wollongong this year, and hopes to continue her studies to become a paramedic.
She will receive $4000 over four years to assist with her tertiary education through the Centenary Scholarship.
Bowral and District Hospital General Manager Ken Barnett said the quality of applications for the scholarship was outstanding this year.
"Congratulations to Lucy and I look forward to hearing about her contribution to health care in the future," Mr Barnett said.
Bowral and District Hospital staff established the Centenary Scholarship program in 1989 to acknowledge the assistance the hospital received from the local community.
