National Servicemen's Association president Robert Brown presented Jim Hughes' family with two medals; the Australian Defence Medal and the Anniversary of National Service Medal.
The presentation took place at Mittagong RSL where Jim was represented by his wife Sue and son Christopher. 'Gentleman Jim' , as he is widely known, was unable to attend due to illness.
Jim was called up for National Service in 1955 and served with 12 National Service Training Battalion at Holsworthy where he was later promoted to the rank of Corporal.
For 65 years, Jim was unaware of his entitlement to any medals. Ray McCann applied for the medals when alerted to Jim's service by fellow Association member Peter Stockel.
Jim and Peter were airline pilots based for three decades in Hong Kong flying with Cathay Pacific and both flew missions into Vietnam during the war years. Jim flew one of the last charter flights out of Saigon in the final days of the war.
