Safety barriers and road widening works being rolled out along a 1.2-kilometre section of the Hume Highway southwest of Berrima will deliver safer drives for motorists.

Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said the $751,000 works carried out between Mereworth and Medworth roads from Monday are part of the NSW Government's commitment to address the number of people being killed and seriously injured on country roads through its Saving Lives on Country Roads program.
"This project will improve the safety of motorists on the Hume Highway at Berrima by reducing the severity of off-road and head-on crashes," Mrs Tuckerman said.

"This road has a poor crash history, with large sweeping curves and many crests, which affects visibility for drivers.
"These upgrades are putting safety first for all road users and will ensure motorists can reach their destination safely."
The work follows three crashes on this section of road over the past five years that left five people injured and one person dead as the result of a head-on crash.
Work will be carried out from Monday 18 January between 7am and 5pm on weekdays and will be completed in about three weeks, weather permitting.
There will be no work on weekends.
Single-lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 80 km/h will be in place during and after work hours, which will add an extra five minutes travel time.
The NSW Government developed the Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative, as part of the Safer Roads Program, to deliver safety improvements for high-risk country roads.
