Gumnut Patisserie's Josh Nickl won the apprentice of the year award and people's choice award in the appreciate of the year category at the 2020 NSW Training Awards.
Mr Nickl told the judges he was "quite humbled" by the recognition.
"Pastry is my life. I've literally grown up in the kitchen of my parent's patisserie," he said.
"As my career progresses, I'm excited to train and lead the pastry chefs of the future."
Mr Nickl said his retail baking apprenticeship gave him the opportunity to obtain hands-on training as well as theory work.
"You're learning all the time but you're also in a working environment with others," he told the judges.
This year the people's choice category was introduced to celebrate 65 years of the NSW Training Awards.
For the first time ever, the public were given the power to cast their vote and recognise the best and brightest in vocational education and training.
The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by Training Services NSW to recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector.
The awards honour and reward the achievements of students, trainers/teachers, training organisations, large and medium employers.
