A new lift and footbridge has made the station more accessible to the community.
Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith said he was delighted that the upgrade to the Mittagong Station was completed.
"This upgrade will ensure that a wider range of customers have access to the station and interchange facilities at Mittagong. The main reason being that the footbridge stairs were the only means of accessing from one platform to the other which is now accessible via the new lifts," Mr Smith said.
"The accessibility upgrade at Mittagong Station will make it easier for all customers especially people with a disability, limited mobility, parents and carers with prams and customers with luggage, to access public transport." Mr Smith added
The new facility includes two new lifts to provide access to the station platforms, improved amenities such as new ambulant toilets and a family accessible toilet, provision of a formal bus stop upgraded accessible car spaces and Kiss and Ride bay.
Other improvements include:
- Improvements to CCTV and lighting to increase safety and security.
- A new hearing loop induction systems to both platforms will help enable people with hearing devices to hear PA announcements.
- New traffic island on Regent St and one way access to improve road and pedestrian safety
"This project which cost $7.7 million was commenced in January 2020 and completed on September 30, 2020. I would like to acknowledge the great work done by the contractors Degnan who have provided this upgrade." said Mr Smith
"The accessibility upgrade at Mittagong Station is part of the NSW Government's Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver accessible, modern and secure public transport infrastructure across the state.
"More than $2 billion has been allocated to the Transport Access Program with more than 470 projects either completed or currently underway across NSW Government's commitment to providing better access to public transport."
"I am sure that all commuters will see the benefit of this upgrade.
"This area has had drought, bushfires and floors and we can still get on with these projects."
Station manager for Mittagong and Bowral Graeme Bond said it was great to see the project finished.
"It is really good and it makes the station look good," he said.
"We wanted the lifts for a long time so it's great to see the project finished and it will benefit the foot traffic in Mittagong."
Chris Degnan from Degnan Constructions said the company used several local contractors including Welby Garden Centre to help source materials.
"It was a pleasure to work with the a community that appreciates new infrastructure," he said.
"It was good to get involved with local contractors."
Mr Smith said he plans for more infrastructure projects in the Southern Highlands.
"We have some road projects on Old South Road and the council has done a great job on Merrigang Street in Bowral," Mr Smith said.
"I'm still working on sporting infrastructure projects in the region and I'm asking for many things.
"I get a few no's but I get few yes's too but I will keep pushing for better infrastructure in the region."
