"On behalf of Council and the Wingecarribee Shire community, I wish to extend my sincere sympathies and deepest condolences to the family of John Fahey," he said.
"As a former NSW premier John made considerable contributions to both state and country. He is perhaps best known for the role he played in helping Sydney secure the 2000 Olympics.
"I first met John in 1984 when he was elected as the State Member for Camden. John worked closely with the then council in obtaining funding for major road upgrades between Moss Vale and Bowral.
"John was a humble and hard-working man with close ties to the Southern Highlands that stretched back to the early 1960s when he attended Chevalier College."
Cr Gair said John was a handy rugby league player in his youth and played many matches across the shire.
"Away from the spotlight of politics John was a dedicated family man," he said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Colleen and family during this difficult time."
